Planning Emergency Procedures? 4 Parts To Make Sure Your Truck Is Evacuation-Ready

Automotive Blog

If you plan to use your truck for emergency evacuation purposes, you need to make sure that it's up for the task. In basic condition, your truck may be prepared for road use. However, in an actual emergency, you may need to take your truck off-road or into downright uninhabitable areas. Here are four steps you need to take to make sure your truck is ready for evacuation during an emergency.

Allow Your Truck to Breathe Better

During emergency evacuations, your truck may need to go through water or dirt. Unfortunately, both situations can cause problems for your car's engine and exhaust system. Water can get inside the engine, causing it to flood out and quit. Dust can clog up the exhaust, leading to the same scenario: Your truck simply stops working. To make sure that doesn't happen, install a snorkel on your truck. A snorkel will ensure that your truck can get through water, dirt, and dust storms without complications.

Give Yourself More Ground Clearance

If you're going to stay on surface streets, your ground clearance will be fine the way it is. However, during an emergency, you can't always stay on the surface streets. Not only that, but sometimes surface streets are littered with debris during an emergency situation. To make sure your truck can get through the debris, give yourself some added clearance. Lifting your truck can give you the ground clearance you need regardless of the terrain you're going through.

Make Sure Your Undercarriage Is Protected

In emergency situations, where off-road travel becomes necessary, you may need more than additional ground clearance. This is particularly true where travel over rocks is concerned. If there's a possibility that you'll need to travel over rough and rocky terrain during an emergency evacuation, be sure to install a skid plate on the underside of your truck. A skid plate will protect the undercarriage of your truck and allow you to travel over rocky terrain without problems.

Protect the Front End Against Impact Damage

When you're evacuating in the middle of an emergency situation, you never know what you'll encounter in front of your truck. Unfortunately, flying debris and other obstacles can destroy the front end of your truck. To make sure your truck isn't disabled by flying debris and can get through whatever is placed in front of it, make sure you install a heavy-duty grille guard on the front end.

Auto Insurance: Comparing Terms and Benefits

Now that I'm finished with college, my parents have turned over several obligations to me. One of them happens to be the insurance on my second hand car. Since it is up for renewal in a few months, I want to compare the benefits and see if someone else can give me a better deal. Already, I've found that auto insurance can get complicated. Do I really need more coverage than the minimum my state requires? How about provisions that will help with auto repair after an accident? How do I know when the cost of a policy is within reason? Slowly, I'm finding answers to these and other questions. If you are also looking into options for auto coverage, stick with me. I'll share what I learn and both of us can end up with policies that meet our needs!
